The Revelstoke Heritage Railway Society was formed in 1988 with a dream of bringing railway history back to Revelstoke. A group of local business persons, rail fans, model railroaders, retired CPR employees and members of the Selkirk Division of the Canadian Railway Historical Association (CHRA). This group envisioned a Museum built in Revelstoke featuring the history of railroading in the rugged mountain of British Columbia. They struggled through with vision, design, financing and marketing to make the dream a reality. The group worked with the main CHRA group in Delson PQ, leading to the long term loan of CPR 2-8-2 5468 to the Revelstoke Railway Museum (RRM). The building budget was set at $1,000,000.00 with funding achieved with 1/3 Federal, 1/3 Provincial and 1/3 local private and corporate donations. In 1992 the dream started to become reality when construction of the Revelstoke Railway Museum was begun. (Watch Video)

The design of the main building of the museum came from Paul Hughes of Toronto, and integrated the same basic design of the old CPR Revelstoke backshop and stylized version of a water tower. The building is constructed with heavy timbers from the local Kozek Sawmill, the largest beams ever produced by the mill. Construction of the main building was complete in early 1993. Shortly after the main buildings completion engine 5468 was brought across Canada by way of the CPR and many volunteers. Along with the 5468 CP Rail System donated business car 4, these two pieces of historical equipment are still the centerpiece of the museums collection. Official opening of the RRM occurred in July 1994, to the delight of the many, many volunteer, Revelstoke residents and local business persons.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort

Welcome to Revelstoke Mountain Resort

For decades, helicopter and cat skiers from around the world have flocked to Revelstoke, BC, attracted by its perfect powder, varied alpine terrain and quaint mountain community. Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing was the company of choice for guests who wanted the ultimate heli ski vacation, with over 50 feet of annual snow, 200,000 hectares (500,000 acres) of exclusive terrain and a long family history of guiding excellence.

Now, in addition to Selkirk Tangier Heli Skiing, there is another way to ski or snowboard Revelstoke’s epic terrain – at Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR).

Heading into our third season of operations, RMR boasts North America’s highest lift-serviced vertical at 1,713 metres (5620 ft), 3031 acres of fall line skiing, high alpine bowls, 13 areas of gladed terrain and phenomenal groomed terrain. Revelstoke Mountain Resort is also the only resort world-wide to offer lift, cat, heli and backcountry skiing from one village base. Across our group of companies, that include RMR, Revelstoke Cat Skiing and Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing, skiers and snowboarders have access to a total of 515,000 acres of terrain.

Upon completion, the Resort will offer more than 20 lifts and over 100 ski and snowboard runs, transforming the area into a world-class destination. The four-season resort will include over 5,000 new housing units (1,500 resort condominiums, 2,000 hotel suites, 850 townhomes and 550 single-family lots), as well as more than 500,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, plus the signature Nick Faldo-designed resort-style golf course.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort is already moving into its next phase with the launch of summer operations, beginning in July 2010.

Old Wooden Head

Old Wooden Head

Quoted from the sign in front of Woodenhead:

Woodenhead’ was created in the 1930’s by local resident Peter Fuoco in his free time while working on the Big Bend Highway Project. Using a double bitted axe and some chisels, he decided to try his hand a sculpting. Government Officials were so impressed with the creation, that they took the finished sculpture and set it along the highway as one of the first road safety warning signs in B.C. The sign advised speeding motorists “not to be a Woodenhead” and slow down. During the 1960’s, when the Trans-Canada Highway opened, Woodenhead was moved to town and became a local heritage artefact. In 2005, the restoration of ‘Woodenhead’ and the construction of the protective roofing was carried out by the City of Revelstoke.
